Routine eye exams not only serve the purpose of ensuring patients can see clearly, but are also important health checkups; many eye-related diseases and conditions can be easily treated if diagnosed early on. At International Opticians, we understand that scheduling and coming into the office can sometimes be stressful for both adults and children. By answering some of our patients' commonly asked questions, our Miami doctors of optometry, Dr. Saba H. Millares, and Dr. Maria Gonzalez, hope to put your anxieties to rest.
Most eye exams last up to about an hour. During that time, we will evaluate both the patient's visual acuity and eye health. During your eye exam at our Miami office, our optician will first discuss your medical history with you. Our optometrist will then take you through a series of eye tests which evaluate your eye function, the integrity of eye structures, and visual acuity to help us detect any early signs of disease and to determine your corrective lens prescription.
Infants, toddlers, and children require different methods of testing and evaluation to determine the health of their eyes. We encourage you to discuss your child's eye exam with our optometrist prior to the appointment.
For most patients an annual eye exam is sufficient. Eye exam frequency depends on several factors, though. The patients' age, health, family medical history, and eye health can increase the number of eye exams recommended per year. This is an important question to discuss with an optometrist during your appointment.
Any condition which can affect eyesight or function is considered a risk, such as high blood pressure and diabetes. Your eyes might also be at risk if you work in a field which requires lots of electronic screen time or if you take any medications which might affect your eyes.
We encourage our patients to write down any questions they have for our optometrist prior to the appointment to ensure they get all of the answers they need. We also ask patients to list any current symptoms, prescription medications, and family medical history. It is also important to bring any current corrective lenses with you to assist our optician with adjusting your prescription. You should also bring a pair of sunglasses to your appointment to protect your eyes from leaving if it is necessary to dilate your eyes during your exam.
If you have any additional questions or concerns, or if you would like to schedule an appointment for an eye exam with one of our experienced optometrists, please contact our Miami office at (786) 460-1081.
